Around the time I wrote this song I had been powerfully moved by the beauty of Stephen Sondheim's 'Send In The Clowns'. The place it touched within me (coupled with his exquisite imagery) made me wonder if I could write a song that touched the same place and in the same manner. It wasn't a deliberate modeling ... Sharon had sorely annoyed me and, when this song came, with the intent of fixing things, I tried to be classy with my response and summoned the 'Clowns' vibe. She hated one of the lines, made no bones about saying so, and offered no alternate lyric. (Evidently she was annoyed too) Her critique caused me to come up with a better line ... a writing credit was due.
The night this was recorded, 6 year old Ambre fell asleep on Sean's couch with a round, red, foam windscreen on her nose.
